This site is an homage to my decades-long love affair with clay. The work you see here is original in design. It reflects a dynamic, simple style that seeks to balance the practical with the aesthetic and celebrates pattern, form, texture - even sound.
My inspiration undoubtedly comes from a childhood lived in the tropics, exposed to all manner of exotic flora and fauna. Touching a vein of clay on the side of a freshly cut dirt road at age eleven is the seminal event that sparked my love of this medium. That initial fascination continues and has become a consuming passion.
A much loved quote by Arts & Crafts designer William Morris "have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful" best describes my philosophy about working with clay. I find great satisfaction in creating a piece that is finely crafted, has enduring beauty, enough humor to spark a smile, and will last indefinitely when well-cared for.
I favor hand building techniques using man-made and natural found objects to slab, pinch, stretch, texture, nip, and tuck porcelain and stoneware. I use electric, gas, and wood kilns, firing in the mid and high fire ranges to ensure durability. The Japanese-inspired glazes I use are food-safe. The tableware is dishwasher and microwave safe.
Every piece shown on this website - bowl, platter, tumbler, teapot, hanging vessel, singing bowl, beast, pod, pupa, reliquary and bocci ball - was individually and lovingly crafted by my hands. For those of you who own a piece (or two), I hope they have served you well and brought you joy over the years.
My work is a part of public and private collections throughout the United States and abroad. It has received awards at various fine craft shows and has been featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting's Oregon Art Beat. Professional affiliations include The Oregon Potters Association (member since 1992), The American Crafts Council, and The National Association of Independent Artists.
I currently live and maintain a studio full-time just west of Portland, Oregon. My work is available through juried art fairs, select galleries, and by appointment. I consider commissions when my schedule permits. The works displayed on this website are a sample of my sculptures and functional designs.
