What is going on in the Portland, Oregon region now?

The first sign of summer is the Portland Rose Festival. Many years, after the parade, the floats are put on public display where people can get an up-close look at them. Some years, this isn't done.
Considerable Local Information has Moved!
In 2003, I became a member of the VirtualTourist web site. There were several reasons for this:
- During the course of missions trips I have accumulated some information and experiences of a more general travel interest. Placing that information here on my personal web site means that only those who find my personal web site will be able to find my experiences, and thus for the general traveler they are not something that can be found very easily. I felt that it would be better for all involved if this type of information were placed into a web site that presented that information that other travelers could find easier than the random chance they might come across my web site. VirtualTourist is organized by city, and categories such as hotels and things to do. Thus, it is ideal for information relating to general travel.
- Web space here at my Internet Provider is tightly controlled. The thing that takes up the most space is photographs, and many photographs are really of a general travel interest. Moving them to a web site oriented around general travel interest moves them to a location where they could still be viewed and linked to, but keeps them out of the size count.
- At the same time, content at VirtualTourist is tightly controlled. It is for travel related information only, and any "religious or political rhetoric" will be deleted. Therefore, I have to be careful about how I go about mentioning the short term mission trips that resulted in my arriving at some of these places. Thus, I still need some content here.
- VirtualTourist can be updated from anywhere with web access, but there are only select places where I can update my personal web site. Furthermore, if I am in a place where I can't access my personal web site, chances are I am doing some traveling, and therefore what I am doing is probably relevant to VirtualTourist.
- I had found some absolutely and completely inaccurate information about a few of the places that I had visited and the traditions of the people in those places posted to a few travel web sites. I felt that posting my own experiences and information, usually gained from locals or missionaries living and working under local conditions, would be of benefit to all. Furthermore I could link to this information from my web site to help make the stories more interesting to those wishing to see more information.
Therefore, in 2003, this page started seeing a significant reduction in updating and in fact some items started to be removed, as more and more of my Portland related information moved to VirtualTourist.
Portland Information on VirtualTourist
My Introduction to Portland, Oregon on VirtualTourist. As of this writing, there are over 400 local tips I have written about the place where I live. Trying to cover them all here would be very difficult.
Some of my favorite activities in Portland include hiking in such places as Forest Park, but my all time favorite park in Portland is probably Mt Tabor Park because it has everything, including some spectacular views of the city and surrounding region.
I have an interest in arts as well, and love to explore what creative people are doing. Naturally, combining these activities, I like to participate in the various local art walks that happen in Portland and the surrounding areas. While it is far more commercialized than the art walks, I also occasionally like to see the creativity expressed in such events as the Zoolights, but I think it is best to only visit that type of event once every several years or so It is simply too crowded to tolerate more often than that.
See my Travel Portland page for a more complete list of direct links to stuff I have written about my home city.
Weather in Portland?
Our winter weather is cold, but not as cold as many other cities in the USA. For example, compare the current weather of Portland, Oregon to the weather in Chicago or New York or Bismark, North Dakota, or Havre, Montana, or even Boise, Idaho. Perhaps people in Brasil think that Portland, Oregon is cold because they confuse it with Portland, Maine?
Compare this with, say, the current weather in Belem, or Manaus or Curitiba or Foz do Iguaçu or Londrina or Rio de Janeiro. Keep in mind summer in South America is winter here in Portland - you need to compare opposite months for a comparison of seasons!

From Portland, Oregon, that's all for now!
